Cryptocurrency Donations Offer Nonprofits a New Avenue for Fundraising

Cryptocurrency Donations Offer Nonprofits a New Avenue for Fundraising

The world of giving is evolving, and nonprofits now have a powerful new tool to tap into a growing donor base: cryptocurrency users. A new partnership between The Blackbaud Giving Fund, Blackbaud, and The Giving Block enables nonprofits to reach a new pool of tech-savvy donors. In 2024, cryptocurrency donations reached an impressive $1 billion, and now, nonprofits can solicit cryptocurrency donations through their JustGiving fundraising page or by adding a donate button widget on their website. This new capability sits alongside traditional donation methods and allows nonprofits to accept the currency without taking on the complexity of converting crypto.

Adding crypto capabilities opens additional donation opportunities for nonprofits looking to reach the 580 million people using crypto. Now, donors can donate cryptocurrency to their favorite nonprofits on the JustGiving platform and enjoy tax benefits, and nonprofits will receive the cash proceeds of that donation from The Blackbaud Giving Fund.

Most 501c3 nonprofits are already eligible to receive crypto donations through The Blackbaud Giving Fund. To see if your organization is eligible, visit the JustGiving homepage and search for your nonprofit in the search box.

How Nonprofits Will Benefit From Cryptocurrency Donations

  • Access to a New Donor Base – Crypto donors tend to be younger and tech-savvy. By accepting cryptocurrency, fundraisers can engage a new segment of donors who may not give through other, more traditional methods.

  • Immediate Conversion – We manage the process of accepting and converting cryptocurrency for you, eliminating the complexity and volatility risk of handling crypto yourself.

  • Powerful Fundraising Tools – By signing up for a free JustGiving account, nonprofits can leverage new powerful fundraising tools that integrate easily into their existing website.

How It Works

Donors can search for nonprofits on JustGiving and choose to donate using over 70 different cryptocurrencies, including major coins like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Tether, as well as popular memecoins like Doge and Shiba. These funds are instantly converted to cash before being distributed to nonprofits through The Blackbaud Giving Fund, ensuring a smooth and risk-free experience. Donors who opt to make crypto donations directly on the JustGiving platform will be subject to a small 2.9% payment processing fee.

When nonprofits sign up for a free JustGiving membership, they gain access to tools that will enhance their fundraising efforts, including:

  • Giving Checkout Button. Nonprofits can put this feature on their website. All donations going through the Giving Checkout have a payment processing fee of 0%, so 100% of a donor’s gift goes to the nonprofit!

  • Customizable Pages. JustGiving offers the ability to create customizable campaign and fundraising pages to increase nonprofits’ reach on the platform.

  • Fundraising Reporting. Presents nonprofits with insights and information about their donors and how their campaigns and fundraisers are performing.

“Charities need to tap into this new donor demographic,” said Alex Wilson, co-founder of The Giving Block. “Our goal is to make accepting cryptocurrency donations just as easy as taking any other online donation, and that’s exactly what this partnership is doing.”

As donor preferences evolve, it’s crucial for nonprofits to stay ahead of the curve. If you’re not yet set up, now is the perfect time to explore how your organization can benefit from cryptocurrency giving. Cryptocurrency donations offer a new way to connect with supporters, increase funding, and create lasting impact. Now is the time to embrace the future of giving!
